Transformer
‘Innovative plant-based dining’ is a glimpse into the restaurant experience at Transformer. It’s serious and hums with a dedication to dishes and diners.
It could be Melbourne’s best vegan restaurant even with the hot competition. The industrial space is generous and well balanced with walls of natural greenery complimenting cold concrete. The ceilings are high and the atmosphere is relaxed.
On the seating side, it’s high stools on the east side and the rest is low restaurant tables and chairs. Given you’ll want to book, trust that the friendly staff will look after you.
Share plates are the format and there’s a range for all tastes. Smokey tofu buns, Persian red lentil pilaf and king oyster mushrooms were all full of flavour and texture. There’s ample room here with a bar serving cocktails, fine beer & wine and sake.
We love the attention to detail in the food and the space (like fresh flowers in the bathroom). This is a considered, thoughtful experience but not stuffy or too serious. We’ll be back again soon.

Good: The food – exceptional.
Not so: We found the music a little loud.
